ILDOT Bridge Restoration, Peoria, Illinois, USA
Project: ILDOT Bridge Restoration
Location: Peoria, Illinois, USA
Client: Illinois Dept. Of Transportation
Scope of Works:
• Application of Glass FRP for long term protection of repaired sections
Project Description:
This three span bridge owned by the Illinois DOT was scheduled for a major overhaul in 2010. The bridge deck was removed and replaced and the 2 piers were completely restored. After the removal of the old bridge deck, the piers were sounded and the deteriorated concrete was removed. The new concrete was installed and allowed to cure for 14 - 28 days.
The DOT wanted to install glass FRP over all the concrete repairs. This is a step taken by most DOTs that realize the benefit of applying FRPs over their concrete patches. Studies have proven that the FRP extends the life of the repairs.
Originally, the area to be covered was 569 square feet. However, during the sounding of the concrete, it was discovered that the repair area would double in size. The FRP did not serve to strengthen the bridge although it was an added benefit. The owner’s only goal was to repair the concrete and avoid any future distress as well as contain any future damage to the bridge.
The DOTs and railroads have thousands of structures that are deteriorating every day. Owners are looking for economical ways to upgrade their structures, stop the deterioration, remove postings that limit the use of their infrastructure and maintain their structures until they have funding to replace them.
